Antique Silver Armada Jug Dublin 1886

A large Irish silver Armada wine jug with a pear shaped body on a pedestal foot with a mechanical lid lifting handle, profusely embossed with acanthus leaf, harebells,scroll work, masks and foliate decoration, applied with a leopard’s head, male and female winged figures. Large oval vacant cartouche either side and a smaller one under the spout. 13 inches ( 33 cms.) high. 29.4 troy ounces ( 915 grams.) Made in Dublin 1886 by Frederick Winder & Charles Lamb. Condition generally good, minor bruising to one cartouche where it may have been previously erased.

The Spanish Armada was launched in 1588 with 130 galleons to overthrow Elizabeth ! and restore Catholic rule. Many of the ships were lost around the English coastline, centuries later valuable artifacts were recovered from these wrecks including massive silver chargers and wine jugs which have come to be known as Armada Dishes & Armada Jugs. This is a Victorian copy of one.
